Words Unlimited was launched in February 2000 when Julianne Bell identified a niche in the financial services industry for a professional tailored newsletter publishing service.

In that time Words Unlimited has grown with the industry it serves, now delivering a full range of professional copywriting services to financial planners, superannuation funds, fund managers, mortgage providers ... in fact any professional who helps people to create, manage and protect their wealth.

The Words Unlimited Team consists of highly qualified people with decades of experience in the Australian financial services industry.

Julianne Bell, Founder and Managing Director
I have been passionate about writing since I was a child when I realised I had a natural gift for expressing myself on paper.

Soon after leaving school I became aware that the best roles for writing (and earning money from it) were in marketing, so I pursued it with a vengeance. As each marketing role was so very different to the last, I soon learned to write marketing material on everything from selling hotels to environmental management - and much stranger things in between!

My last 'real job' was as Business Development Manager for Godfrey Pembroke in Brisbane.  I was taken under the Principal's wing, trained well and given the choice to become a financial planner.  The technical side of finance didn't feed my creative needs, so I took the plunge and started my own business in a completely different industry altogether.  (Don't ask!)

It soon became apparent that I wasn’t doing what I truly loved – writing.  So in late 1999 I dreamt up Words Unlimited... a business that provided a professional newsletter writing service direly needed by so many financial planners.

As the business grew, I extended the services to encompass client communication across the entire financial services industry.

I soon got so busy I couldn’t do it all myself, so I invited retired financial planners with a flair for writing to join me. That decision has been one of my best as Words Unlimited now has access to some of the most passionate financial writers, ready to service our clients at a moment's notice.

I couldn’t have done all this without the fantastic support of our Client Services Director, Anne Tucker.  She is a dream to work with, as all of our clients and anyone who knows her will testify.

I love my job.  As Client Services Director, I focus on our clients and making them happy. In a nutshell, I manage the 'engine room', and closely monitor every project to ensure that our clients are consistently happy with the service they receive.

I joined Words Unlimited in February 2002 following a varied and interesting career interstate. Backed by a Degree in Business Administration, I’ve worked predominantly within the financial services industry, gaining experience in both the corporate and small business sectors. My roles have ranged from Administration Manager to Business Analyst/Consultant, Managed Funds Development Coordinator and joint business owner of a boutique firm providing financial education to military bases in Darwin.

I am a perfectionist, so I have found my niche at Words Unlimited, providing exceptional service to our clients.  I have undertaken a professional proofreading and editing course, so I can support our financial writers and ensure all work is completed to the highest standard.

Happily married with an active toddler, our home life is a hive of activity. We love bike riding through the parks and taking our boat out to enjoy beautiful Moreton Bay.

Peter Grace, Financial Writer
I’ve discovered that I have a unique ability to organise complex facts in logical and simple ways.

Having been involved in superannuation and financial planning since the early 1980’s working for National Mutual (now AXA), public sector superannuation in Queensland and RetireInvest, I stake my reputation on delivering top quality results on time.

I specialise in superannuation, retirement income, social security, investments and tax planning. I’ve been working with Words Unlimited since October 2002 and in that time I’ve written hundreds of newsletter articles, some websites, corporate brochures, and marketing and compliance material.

I enjoy creating case studies to illustrate financial planning issues in practice.

I have written and updated study materials on superannuation, SMSFs, investments, insurance, PS146 compliance and tax planning for the FPA, ANZIIF, CPA Australia and ASFA. I’ve facilitated courses in superannuation and retirement planning, self managed super and investment planning and I assess students for PS146 compliance.

With all this variety, life is never boring.  Writing for Words Unlimited is something I love doing.

Alistair McCaskill, Financial Writer

I have always enjoyed the opportunity to indulge my passion for writing. My highly varied career has allowed me to apply my pen to scientific papers, technical manuals, financial plans and client communication, and more recently to ethical philosophy and creative writing.

I started out in medical science. Soon after completing a PhD in immunology I joined the Diagnostics Division of ICI Australia (now Orica), and developed a range of test kits and reagents for medical laboratory use. In the following years I took on roles in technical service and export sales.

Looking for a new challenge, I entered financial planning in 1998, and completed the Diploma of Financial Planning and Certified Financial Planner courses. With my analytical background, I revelled in the technical aspects of the role, and in addition to looking after clients, became a director and was responsible for research and portfolio construction for a busy financial planning practice.

In 2003, I decided to pursue other interests, including the completion of at least one of the many books I’d started writing. I still maintain strong links to the financial planning industry through Words Unlimited, and as a facilitator of investment planning and superannuation courses for Kaplan (formerly Tribeca).

Jeremy Rankin, Financial Writer

“I’d like to pray for world peace, and for the effective use of visual aids in financial education”.

My draft acceptance speech for a certain beauty pageant is – I admit – unlikely ever to see the light of day (in that forum). But it nonetheless reveals the value that I place on the appropriate use of all available communication tools in written and oral education pieces.

Over the past 15 years I have worked and studied in various roles within the finance industry, each of which has called on my writing ability in a different context.

  • At Colonial First State (and previously at ING Australia), I regularly authored technical articles and presentations to educate Financial Advisers on topical financial planning issues. I was also occasionally called upon to write client newsletter articles, interview scripts, and Statements of Advice for Advisers to present to their clients;
  • At the Australian Taxation Office, my work included the preparation of briefs to our Legal Counsel to assist in Federal Court tax appeals, as well as the construction of a staff education program following the “Ralph Review” business tax reforms in 1999;
  • At University whilst studying Law and Commerce, I have written papers for submission on topics ranging from estate planning to marketing to environmental law, and I prepared a thesis on death benefit decisions of the Superannuation Complaints Tribunal.

During that time I have witnessed some of (in my opinion) the better exponents of effective communication as well as some of the worst perpetrators, and I have learnt a great deal from both sides.

We live in a time where “mums and dads” are becoming increasingly thirsty for information about financial matters. I am inspired by the knowledge that an article or presentation that I have written can sometimes provide them with that new insight, that one trigger which – to put it simply – makes it all make sense!

I particularly enjoy the dynamics of superannuation and retirement planning – this was the main reason that I moved away from the “pure” tax environment of the ATO into the Financial Planning arena some years ago. The oft-changing rules and regulations mean that new opportunities and new dangers arise regularly, and it is extremely rewarding to be in a position to analyse and translate complex regulations to a client whose financial future depends on getting the right information and advice.

Warwick Penn, Financial Writer

For most people, superannuation and retirement planning are very confusing issues. To help get the most out of them, they need clear, practical and accurate information.

To be able to communicate this information, it is essential to have a strong background in the following areas :

  • Extensive first-hand experience in advising personal and / or corporate superannuation clients on the major issues of legislation, investments and taxation that affect them.
  • Knowledge of the sources of relevant up-to-date information
  • Intuitive skill as a wordsmith and proof reader
  • Appropriate qualifications as evidence of commitment to learning about your chosen profession.

I have been fortunate to have had over 30 years experience with four leading international organisations specialising in employee benefit consulting. This included 11 years at William Mercer (the world’s largest in the industry) when I was consultant to many major corporations such as BHP, CSR, Nestle, David Jones and Kellogg.

One of my most satisfying achievements was to develop and produce a unique videotape/audiotape/print program on Retirement Planning for sale to corporations to educate their employees.

For eight of the last ten years, I worked as a senior financial planner with a national group looking after high net worth individuals. For the last two, I was engaged in writing and producing regular newsletters for the benefit of clients of their planners around Australia.

I have operated my own self-managed super fund since 1994, and witnessed a multitude of changes in this area since then.

In academic terms, I hold a Bachelor of Economics from Sydney University and am a Certified Practising Accountant. I was a Certified Financial Planner, having qualified in 1998, however I relinquished this following my retirement from full-time employment.

My wife and I are keen sailors. We race every Friday night during daylight saving and in the last two years have competed in sailing rallies in Croatia and Sardinia/Corsica. I was skipper in both rallies.

Tennille Catchpole, Financial Writer

My passion for writing began at university when it always seemed to be me volunteering to be the person to compile the group assignment and create a masterpiece that was easy to read and made sense, but also got us all great marks! 
 
I also have a thirst for education that I find hard to quench and this has helped gain me an Honours degree in Environmental Management, a Masters Degree in Financial Planning, and in my current pursuit of attaining Certified Financial Planner status.
 
Over the past 12 years I have worked in a variety of fields including hospitality, retail, local government, and a private financial planning practice.  I have been working in the financial services industry since 2002 and have fulfilled a range of roles including Personal Assistant, Paraplanner, Mortgage Broker, and Financial Adviser.
 
As a Financial Adviser, I always found that my most important role was to educate my clients about financial management, assisting them to understand and appreciate the ways in which financial markets operate. 
 
To make it easier to convey this information, I created and penned a monthly newsletter for my previous employer.  As a result, anxiety among clients during periods of volatility was practically non-existent.
 
I now find myself working as a Financial Writer for Words Unlimited and I’m excited.  Words Unlimited provides me with an opportunity to indulge my passion for writing and financial education, knowing that my work will assist other organisations to achieve their desired outcomes also.
 
My love of writing is paralleled by my passion for reading, and I enjoy nothing more than spending a lazy day curled up with man’s best friend - a good book.

Gerard Shea, Financial Writer

I have always had an interest in financial matters, from studying commerce and economics at high school through to accounting, financial planning and corporate law in more recent times.
 
Having worked on both sides of the finance industry, as an investigator with the Australian Securities Commission (now ASIC) and as a paraplanner, I have gained an unique insight into the industry as a whole. In addition, my previous employment with the Health Insurance Commission has given me a good grounding in the health insurance industry.
 
Combining my interests and experience with my passion for writing is a fortuitous opportunity and working with Words Unlimited has given me the chance to do this.
 
My preferred method of writing is to keep it simple and provide clear and accurate information, the kind I would like to receive myself. I enjoy researching and compiling information and presenting it in an understandable way. With more and more people becoming involved in the financial markets, either directly or indirectly through superannuation, coupled with the thirst for financial knowledge increasing at the same rate, I see a great necessity for good financial writing throughout the community.
 
Apart from my interests in finance and writing I also have a passion for reading and learning, especially in the areas of law, science and politics – where I have stood as a candidate in my local government elections.
 
My greatest loves, however, are my wife and two sons whom I could not do without. Working from home for the past four years has given me the chance to spend more time with my family and watching my youngest son develop during his early years. I am also quite fond of my computer, where I can often be found late into the night doing weird and wonderful things. I enjoy the creative freedom that computers provide.

Catherine Chivers, Financial Writer

I was introduced to the financial planning industry in 1995. As a newly minted economics graduate, I joined the recently formed Godfrey Pembroke as a paraplanner not long after the merger between Pembroke Financial Planners and Godfrey Weston. 

Back then the group was a true boutique advisory firm specialising in mid to high net worth clients. I worked with three advisers who each had stellar careers in the chartered accounting and finance worlds, but who wanted to be part of the new movement to provide strategic financial advice to clients on a fee for service basis. 
 
With this excellent grounding, I gained extensive experience from a variety of roles across the industry, furthering my knowledge and skills. 

During that time I obtained a Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning and also CFP status.
 
Later, I was approached to establish a new advice and strategy function for Hillross Financial Services.  I worked with many wonderful advisers across the country who had established their own successful planning businesses and wanted to take them to the next level from an advice and/or service perspective.  I also learned so much about the corporate management side of a financial planning licensee during my time there. 
 
The success of that role led me to establish my own consulting practice where I work with several groups to assist them in myriad activities towards building successful financial practices. 
 
I bring to the clients of Words Unlimited a passion for the financial planning industry and a very strong understanding of the key industry dynamics.  In addition, I have a strong technical background and understanding of the real-life issues facing the industry - both at the planning coalface as well as the management side, and an ability to communicate this to all stakeholders in a straightforward and plain English manner.

Sally Luxton, Financial Writer

Customer service has always been the focus of my 15 years experience in the financial services sector.

I worked for five years in retail banking and ten years in the financial markets, broking global institutional and retail clients in derivatives products. 
 
The complexity and risk profile of derivatives products coupled with a stringent regulatory environment requires proactive, accurate and concise verbal and written communication with all types of clients. 
 
My passion for writing began when I was responsible for compiling a client kit for retail clients, explaining the workings of trading futures and options products.  Clients came from diversified backgrounds and education levels so the art of reaching everyone is to use the old KISS cliché – Keep It Simple Stupid.  Using plain words and simple sentences without market jargon is the only way to ascertain what an inexperienced client really wants to do and explain to them what they can do.  Misused jargon is a recipe for potential significant losses in derivatives markets.
 
I have also contributed course material to a Diploma in Financial Services (Financial Planning) for a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).  The main subjects and topics I cover include derivatives, securities, portfolio management, investment products, risk management, economic fundamentals and general financial services overview chapters.  However, being tertiary qualified with a Bachelor of Commerce and Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment, I like to research just about anything and enjoy reorganising information into a simple, logical sequence for easy understanding.
 
Together with my husband, I have enjoyed the fast pace of the futures markets working in large dealing rooms in Australian Banks.  My husband was also a trader on the Sydney Futures Exchange trading floor prior to the market becoming computerized.   However, in recent years with the arrival of our two children we now both work from home and enjoy a lot of family time.

Michael Kuter, Professional Editor
In the course of a rather variegated career, I have worked as a proofreader, waterside worker, public speaker, research scientist, labourer, professional photographer, thoracic physiologist and teacher.
 
Born in Sydney, I spent five years in Wau, New Guinea, and came to Brisbane at age 11. I joined Mirror Newspapers as a ‘copyholder’ (reading the copy out loud to the proofreader), and was promoted to proofreader two years later. After saving for some years, I studied physiology and biochemistry at The University of Queensland, and subsequently held technical, research and clinical appointments in medical and veterinary science.
 
After moving to Sydney and a stint as scientist with St Vincent’s Hospital, I joined a national health and lifestyle magazine as their assistant editor, chief sub-editor, researcher and writer.
 
Over the next seven years I also taught in TAFE, leaving my desk in time to sprint over the road to the college.

On returning to Brisbane in 1996, I established a consultancy offering specialist and generalist editing, indexing and proofreading services.
 
Currently I am the state delegate to the Queensland Government’s advisory body, the Creative Industries Skills Council (CISC), and to the profession’s national body, the Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd). I am involved in writing the curriculum for training editors and proofreaders, and in mentoring editors as they progress through the ranks.
 
I have joined Words Unlimited to add further depth to the team in providing a professional editing service to the financial services industry.

Melissa Giles, Professional Editor
 
I started my career as a freelance magazine journalist and in this role I have particularly enjoyed producing profiles and sharing other people's life stories with readers. I have long had a fascination with personal stories and remain a devoted reader of biography and autobiography.
 
I continue to write magazine articles and now have added editing and proofreading to my freelance services. My experiences with these different aspects of publishing have enhanced my understanding of the process and enriched my work life.
 
My formal studies include courses in editing, journalism and history, but I have many other interests. As a writer I indulge my curiosity, exploring a diverse range of issues; however, being an editor and proofreader provides me with opportunities to read the work of others, covering an even broader variety of topics.
 
Through my postgraduate studies in journalism and practical experience I have developed advanced skills in concise writing and effective, targeted communication. As an editor, these skills help me to contribute to the clarity of other writers’ work.
